In 2023 the Manukau United Football Club released their report on Racism in Football in Aotearoa, as part of the NZ National Commission for UNESCO’s “Tackling Racism in Sport” funding project.
The NZ National Commission for UNESCO “Tackling Racism in Sport” funding project is a programme including resources and communication tools to reduce racism and promote meaningful and sustainable social cohesion within a sporting context.
The Racism in Football in Aotearoa research report draws on qualitative data from 18 self-selected participants to understand what racism in football looks and feels like. Their experiences have generated a series of emerging insights and opportunities that will be used as a basis to design other initiatives to further work in this area.
The research report has received coverage in local media including the following article: Children as young as eight racially abused at football games - Auckland club study | Stuff.co.nz
