The National Commission has a long history of supporting UN International Holocaust Remembrance Day celebrations across Aotearoa New Zealand.
UN International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is celebrated world-wide on January 27th. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops.
In Aotearoa New Zealand the day is commemorated by a number of ceremonies across the motu, organised by the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand.
The National Commission recognises the importance of marking this day to raise awareness about the need to nurture peace and human rights.
As well as providing an opportunity to commemorate the victims and their legacy, the day alerts people of all ages around the world about the dangers of racist and extreme ideologies.
