We were delighted to support more than 1000 students across Tāmaki Makaurau and Te Whanganui-a-Tara to experience feature film RED, WHITE & BRASS on the big screen, prior to its public release in 2023.
Inspired by the true story of writer and producer Halaifonua (Nua) Finau, RED, WHITE & BRASS, tells the underdog story of group of Pacific New Zealanders who band together and see what can be achieved as a community. A proud Tongan, born and raised in Aotearoa, Nua is at the forefront of bringing Polynesian stories to our screens.
Thanks to Square Eyes Film Foundation and Piki Films and supported by the National Commission for UNESCO 1,178 students across Tāmaki Makaurau and Te Whanganui-a-Tara were able to experience a collective film screening experience and inspiring filmmaker engagement, alongside messaging that supported the power of creative communities, authentic storytelling and indigenous language accessibility.
Alongside the thrill of seeing a film preview ahead of general release, students were connected to Nua and members of the cast, who shared their inspiring personal pathways through interactive Q&A's.
The screening focused on school children in Tāmaki and Pōneke communities where students may not have many opportunities for class trips such as this, or regularly attend films in cinemas with their whānau.
Square Eyes Film Foundation and Piki Films have developed an educational resource for post-screening classroom use, developed in partnership with the Tongan Teachers Association it offers creative conversation starters and an introduction to concepts and language used in the film. Developed to support teachers in a wide range of learning outcomes in use of film in the classroom, the resource was created to support informal discussion, exploring topics including identity and belonging, while highlighting Tongan language and values.
