Tara Shepherd

UNESCO Aotearoa Youth Leader

Growing up in Westport, Tara’s lived experiences as a disabled wāhine shaped her commitment to inclusivity, equity, and sustainability. She has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science, double majoring in Environmental Management and Politics from the University of Otago. Here she developed a strong foundation in blending local knowledge, with a focus on coastal erosion, into environmental solutions.

Tara’s leadership began at age five and has extended nationally as the former Co-President of the National Disabled Students’ Association, where she championed accessibility and equal opportunities for disabled youth across Aotearoa.

She sits on a variety of boards including Disabled Person's Assembly National Executive Committee, Te Poutāhū Disability Voices focusing on the curriculum refresh and Whakapuāwai for New Zealand Health Group. Tara has also represented youth perspectives on international platforms, including speaking on behalf of NGOs at the inaugural Conference for Pacific Education Ministers.

Particularly passionate about the environment and advocacy for rural communities her mahi following a state of emergency July 2021 flooding event saw her at the forefront as Waste Management Coordinator removing 1,107 tonnes worth of waste, ultimately creating the template for the rest of the country.

Now working as an Infrastructure Assets Technical Support Officer at the Buller District Council, her passion for improving essential accessible infrastructure for underrepresented regions is often overlooked in larger conversations about development.
