Have you noticed something familiar on the sails of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirella boat?
In June Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and UNESCO announced the launch of a new partnership to spread the message of ocean conservation to an international audience during the 37th America's Cup. As part of this the UNESCO and SEA BEYOND logos are displayed on the sails of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli boat.
Supported by the Prada group, SEA BEYOND is an educational programme conducted by UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) to raise awareness on the issues of sustainability and ocean preservation for younger generations.
“The shared interest of UNESCO and the Prada Group in ocean literacy is at the core of the SEA BEYOND program, which combines educational activities with support for the dissemination of scientific research and the development of educational projects related to marine conservation,” says Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.
Through the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli boat, the protection of the ocean will be at the forefront of everyone’s mind during the America’s Cup.
“To know that our team and our boat have been chosen to promote ocean literacy and the protection of the marine environment worldwide alongside UNESCO is a great honour and we will strive to be worthy of it,” said Max Sirena, skipper and team director of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, at the time of the launch.
The decision to launch this partnership with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli is part of a long-term project by UNESCO to support and observe the oceans through sailing, which has involved sailors from the Barcelona World Race, the Ocean Race and the Vendée Globe over the years.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli is currently competing in the Louis Vuitton final and could soon be facing off against Emirates Team New Zealand for the Americas Cup.
The NZ National Commission is also committed to promoting ocean conservation and does so through our support of the UN Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and through our website: Te Tini a Tangaroa
Conducted by UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to raise awareness on the issues of sustainability and ocean preservation, SEA BEYOND is an educational program supported by the Prada Group since 2019. The project has contributed to the progress of ocean education on a global scale, through a series of training initiatives dedicated to younger generations. Since July 2023, SEA BEYOND has expanded its areas of intervention: in addition to educational activities, the program supports the dissemination of scientific research and the development of humanitarian projects, both connected to the protection of the sea. As part of SEA BEYOND, the Prada Group has trained its more than 14,000 employees worldwide on the principles of ocean education through virtual reality educational content and the AWorld app, the official platform selected by the United Nations for a more sustainable lifestyle.
The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) aims to reverse the cycle of decline in the health of our oceans and create improved conditions for sustainable development of the ocean, seas and coasts.
The Decade provides a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to strengthen the management of our oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity.
The Decade is designed to facilitate global communication and mutual learning across research and stakeholder communities and will support new, collaborative partnerships that can deliver more effective science-based management for our ocean space and resources.
