The 8th Memory of the World Committee for Asia (MOWCAP) and the Pacific General Meeting were held in the Republic of Korea from 29 May to 1 June. A record 28 countries from the Asia Pacific region were represented at the meeting.
The New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO funded two members of the New Zealand Memory of the World Committee to attend this important meeting. They were able to actively contribute to the strategic direction of the Programme for the next two years.
Dianne Macaskill, Chair of the New Zealand Memory of the World Committee, was re-elected to the MOWCAP Bureau. The Bureau oversees MOWCAP activities between General Meetings.
The delegates at the General Meeting voted to inscribe 10 documentary heritage collections onto the MOWCAP register. These included the first MOWCAP inscriptions for the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. The guidelines for the Memory of the World Programme are currently being reviewed and a date has not yet been set for the next MOWCAP inscription round.
