We are delighted to announce that Dr Mahsa McCauley has been appointed by the Minster of Education as our new Communication and Information Commissioner.
Mahsa brings exceptional expertise in artificial intelligence, digital futures, and technology leadership. Her deep experience across AI, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion will play a vital role in advancing the National Commission’s work across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Mahsa joins Chair Liz Longworth, Commissioners Linda Faulkner, Dr Dan Hikuroa, Professor Gail Gillon and Laura Black on the National Commission Board.
The National Commission connects Aotearoa New Zealand to valuable UNESCO resources, networks, and programmes (such as the Creative Cities Network and the Global Geopark Network). Our mission is to support a sustainable, healthy and more peaceful future by sharing ideas and deepening connections between the people of Aotearoa New Zealand and with UNESCO globally.
Dr Mahsa McCauley is Chair of the AI Forum New Zealand and a leading expert in artificial intelligence whose work bridges technology, education and policy. She is an Associate Professor of AI at Auckland University of Technology and a Fulbright Scholar, with research spanning AI, machine learning, IoT and cybersecurity in partnership with industry and government.
She is the Founder and Director of She Sharp Charitable Trust, a volunteer-led organisation supporting women in technology and inspiring secondary school girls into digital careers, reaching thousands through events and industry partnerships. Mahsa also serves on the boards of NZTech, EdTechNZ and the World Summit Awards, where she contributes to AI strategy, education initiatives and projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
She is a recognised public speaker and commentator on AI, cybersecurity and the future of work, and has received numerous national and international honours for her leadership, innovation and advocacy for diversity in technology.
