Christchurch’s Observatory Tower Receives UNESCO Award for Heritage Conservation

The Observatory Tower Conservation Project in Christchurch has been honoured with the Award of Merit in the 2024 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

A Milestone in Heritage Conservation

This prestigious recognition celebrates the successful rebuilding of the historic 1896 Observatory Tower, which was severely damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The project restores the tower's original role as a hub for scientific discovery and education.

The restoration included seismic reinforcement and the technically complex reinstatement of the historic telescope to working order, allowing the Observatory Tower to once again serve as a place of exploration of the southern skies.

“The rebuilding of the Observatory Tower after its devastation in the earthquake is notable for its technical achievements,” remarked the Jury of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards. “The careful research and extensive materials testing, combined with the reinstatement of its historic telescope, exemplify excellence in post-disaster recovery and heritage conservation.”

The project is part of the broader recovery efforts of the Arts Centre and the historic core of Christchurch, representing a significant chapter in the city's ongoing post-earthquake revitalisation.
