The IFLA-UNESCO School Library Manifesto 2025 highlights how school libraries improve and enhance teaching and learning for the entire school community through active collaborations for literacies, critical thinking, creativity, and global citizenship.
The IFLA-UNESCO School Library Manifesto 2025 presents the latest joint vision of UNESCO and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).
It is an update of the original IFLA/UNESCO School Library Manifesto, first endorsed by UNESCO’s General Conference in 1999 and is a companion to the IFLA-UNESCO Public Library Manifesto. The IFLA-UNESCO School Library Manifesto defines and advances the role of school libraries and demonstrates how school libraries help students succeed.
The 2025 update was unanimously endorsed by the Intergovernmental Council of the UNESCO Information for All Programme in their 13th Session in April 2025 opening a new chapter in IFLA and UNESCO’s historic partnership.
The new edition reflects the many changes in technology, society and education, and is an important and useful tool for school library advocacy for quality and inclusive education.
The text is the outcome of collaborative work between IFLA (of which New Zealand is a member), the International Association of School Librarianship and the global school library community.
