Together with the Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies, we funded two Pacific scholars to attend and present at the International Association of Media and Communication Research Conference (IAMCR2024) in Christchurch.
The two scholars were Masters students Lotus Rana who presented on Norf’k Ailen aklan’s relationships with mutiny on the Bounty narratives, and Assistant Professor Manuel Cruz, who presented on the role of social media in sovereignty and demilitarisation activism in Guåhan.
The prestigious IAMCR 2024 conference brought together 1,300 international delegates from over 60 different countries to discuss and present on the conference theme Whiria te tāngata / Weaving people together: Communicative projects of decolonising, engaging, and listening.
As well as supporting the scholars to attend the conference, we supported a networking event and panel discussion on decolonising media and communication. The panel discussion featured Pacific media and communication researchers/practitioners and was chaired by our Social Sciences Commissioner Emeritus Professor Tagaloatele Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop.
Panelists explored alternative ways of theorising and thinking about our contemporary media and communication environment. The event was attended by academics as well as Canterbury’s wider Pacific community.
The networking event, that followed the panel discussion. was very valuable for all who attended, including the two scholars, with people making connections, trading contacts and setting up further opportunities for networking and collaboration.
