2015 was declared by UN resolution (A/RES/68/221) to be the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL2015). In making this declaration, the United Nations recognizes of the importance of light and its many important applications in all facets of modern life. From high-speed optical networks to evocative art to energy-efficient lighting, light and light-based technologies inform, connect and illuminate our people, our world and beyond.

The New Zealand National Committee for the International Year of Light (IYL2015-NZ) is leading our national programme for this tremendously exciting event. This diverse group brings together stakeholders from our schools, universities, businesses and government from across New Zealand to organize and coordinate events during 2015. Events based on the themes of light and light-based technologies will be held throughout New Zealand over the course of 2015.
